Three reasons to exercise outdoors this winter

When winter creeps in, bringing chilly air and gloomy skies with it, we have the tendency to flee to the indoors.

But, on a fresh Winter’s day when the sun is shining, though it may be rather chilly out, there are actually plenty of reasons you should rug up and get exercising outside.

Here’s three of them:

1.   Vitamin D

Vitamin D is extremely important in keeping your body healthy. It ensures your bones stay strong and may even keep your muscles and immune system functioning properly. The sun is the best, most natural source of vitamin D we have.

Because the daylight hours tend to be shorter in winter, and we tend to stay inside more often, it’s important to get out and get your daily source of vitamin D if the sun is shining.

But, remember your sunscreen if you’re planning on staying out there for a while!

2.   Exercise itself!

Everyone knows there are many benefits of exercise at any time of the year. It improves your mental and physical health, increases energy levels, improve sleep and much more!

In the wintertime, it’s easy to let yourself think “it’s too cold to exercise today” or “I’m too comfy and warm!”.

But, why would we want to let any of these benefits slide just because it’s cold out?! Whack on a beanie, some gloves, a long sleeved top and workout pants, and you’ll be warm in no time!

We’ll mention some awesome activities that will make you look forward to getting outside in winter later on!

3.   Keep away the winter blues

We all know that feeling that comes with the colder weather. The days are shorter and darker than usual, and consequently, you can feel sluggish, and more down, more often than normal.

But don’t worry, it’s very common, and getting fit outside can help you combat it!

The natural light we get from the sun produces serotonin, the feel-good hormone in our body. And as we talked about earlier, there’s less sun in the winter, so our bodies can end up producing less serotonin.

So, try getting out and getting a bit of sun for just 15 minutes twice a week! We also tend to exercise less, which we know stop you from getting those awesome health benefits—plus, exercise releases endorphins, which are another type of feel-good hormone!
